PostSubject: Pineapple   Mon May 05, 2008 12:17 pm

Pineapples are one of the most distinctive fruits there is; resembling yucca plans, they have a lot of variation within the species. Wild varieties have serrated, thorny leaves on top and produce seed, while the modern varieties we see in supermarkets have smoother leaves and smaller fruits, and donít set seed. Available all year round and always tasty, pineapples are a staple of a fruit salad no matter what time of year.

Thought to have been in cultivation for thousands of years, first by natives of Central America, they served as one of the strongest images of the first voyage to the New World, and were one of the first luxuries transported back. A tropical plant, itís happiest in the tropics, but grows as far up as Hawaii. Difficult to grow, they need high soil and air temperatures, high humidity (except for when ripening), lots of light, and rich, open compost, together making them pretty difficult to grow in the UK, but not impossible. If youíre up for a challenge, try it!
